‘ESC adventure in Oostende’ is a European volunteering project designed in the framework of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC).
The project is developed for international volunteers who want to experience youth work in a different context and country. The service consists of 2 months of volunteering on one of the Flemish Don Bosco youth centre De Takel in Oostende. We invite two volunteers from 1 July to 31 August 2021. The aim of youth centre is to create an enjoyable time for the youths coming to the youth centre.
The volunteers are expected to work together with other staff members and volunteers. The volunteers work together in planning, implementing and evaluating the program. During this service, we strongly promote active participation in all the tasks and duties, formal and non-formal moments with youths and other volunteers.
The volunteers will learn a lot from working with young people in a non-formal context. This is a simple but very effective working method which they can take home and implement easily in their own working area.
During the weekends (for the Takel it is Monday and Tuesday), the international volunteers will take part in special program organized and carried out by Belgian trainers and youth workers. This program will offer intercultural activities, cultural sightseeing, training and evaluation. In the weekends, the volunteers might need to work in the youth centre (with some free days off course) and attend the youths in their activities.
Focus on inclusion
There will be a specific focus on inclusion during the project. Creating an inclusive society is one of the priorities of the European Solidarity Corps program. That is why we chose to work on inclusive youth work. The volunteers will get an introduction about inclusive youth work in Flanders and will share experiences how this done in their home countries and sending organizations.
During the service in the youth centre, the volunteers will analyse the inclusive working style and will organize an action, activity or a campaign to improve to inclusive way of working. There can be a focus on:
- promotion campaign to reach out to social inclusive target groups (children and animators)
- actions to lower barriers for inclusion
- concrete actions to make games and activities more inclusive
- info campaign on inclusion…all different but all equal…
The volunteers will be supported during this process by a big team of volunteers.
At the end of the project we reflect on the whole process with the purpose to develop ideas and actions to take to the own organization where they can be implemented.
“Let’s all go for inclusive youth work, just like Don Bosco wanted”
Youths 4 youth is a project designed in the framework of European Solidarity Corps. The project aims to develop different competences of young people in a European context. Next to that, one of the main features of this project is the focus on inclusion and working on a society based on solidarity.
The non-formal learning context of Youths 4 Youth enables the volunteers to develop specific competences on a very broad level. By bringing together European young people countries in another context, Y4Y wants to promote European and intercultural awareness. Volunteers will be encouraged to create and take every learning opportunity they have during throughout the project.
We want to empower young people to take up responsibility for their society and to engage them in local, national and international volunteering.
During the learning process, Youth Pass will be used as a reflection tool on the volunteer’s learning process. After the project, every volunteer will receive a Youth Pass where the obtained and developed competences will be described.
Jeugddienst Don Bosco will take care of the project and application grant at Erasmus +. This means that most of the expenses will be covered through the project grant.
Costs like food, accommodation and transport will be covered by the Erasmus+ grant.
Volunteers will receive a small amount of pocket money and a household allowance for personal expenses.
We are expecting the participants to arrive on 1st of July and leave earliest 31st of August 2021 (after 02.00pm).
Dates can be flexible (starting 31st, 1st or 2nd), but the minimum length of the volunteering project is 60 days)
Airports that can be used, by preference:
1) Brussels National-airport. (It is the easiest and most practical way to get to the venue of the first weekend)
2) Charleroi – Brussels South (also an option, but quite far from the venue of the first weekend, so travelling there will take some time)
Flixbus, Eurolines (or Ouibus, GoEuro): both bus companies have a very good connection with Brussels or Antwerp from most European (big) cities. These busses are nowadays also quite comfortable for travelling.
We kindly ask to stay inside the travel budget. You can check the schedule underneath to see what is your max. budget (reimbursement) If you exceed this budget, we will not be able to refund you the extra costs made.
We try to keep this project open to every young person interested in doing a voluntary service abroad. We think that this is a great project to develop new competences and explore your personal capacities.
Although we have some basic conditions to make sure that quality of the service can be assured. Please mind these conditions!

Information about Youth Centre De Takel
De Takel is a youth care centre for young people between 12 and 25 years. It is a place where they can come together for all kinds of activities and socializing. The target group for De Takel consists mainly of: young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods of Oostende, refugees, minors…. This creates a very multicultural audience, with mostly indigenous youths and a large number of vulnerable young people. The youth centre is for these young people a place where they can spend their free time and where they can do ‘their’ thing: billiard, play station, computer games, board games, hang in the sofa…
The main task of the volunteers is to build up a relationship with the youngsters and to gain their trust. In this respect, the volunteer is expected to accompany them in the activities and their visit to the youth centre and take part in the daily activities of the Youth Centre. The volunteer will be supported in this by the experienced staff of De Takel. They have been working with ESC-volunteers for some years now, and have developed a good guidance system to work with the volunteers.
In 2018 De Takel started a girls’ department to reach out to more girls from families living around De Takel. Step by step, with an attractive program and some nice initiatives, De Takel built up an engaged group of girls who are now coming to weekly activities of De Takel.
More specifically, the tasks of the volunteers will consist of:
What guidance can you expect?
The volunteers are expected to take part in a 25-30 hour week. Compensatory leave will be possible in case of weekend performances. The volunteers will plan their timetable in consultation with the head of De Takel. This means that the volunteers will be able to determine how their working hours are puzzled into the opening hours of the Youth Centre.
These opening hours are:
Wednesday: 14:00 - 18:15, 19:00 - 22:00
Thursday: 19:00 - 22:00
Friday: 19:00 - 24:00
Saturday: 14:00 - 18:15, 19:30 - 24:00
Sunday: 14:00 - 18:15, 19:30 - 22:00.
In addition to Monday and Tuesday the volunteers are entitled to 2 days of holidays per month. Together with the flexible working schedule, the volunteers can plan longer weekends off.
In summertime, this time schedule might be changing because of flexible programs and activities.
N.B.: Soon we will send you the special activities and outings for the ESC volunteers during their stay in Oostende.
